Pvt Gerald 'Jerry' T. Stoyle Jr Service# 32252332 82nd /17th Airborne/507th PIR HQ/HQ Company Pvt Stoyle was born on April 7th, 1920 in Dunkirk, New York and was killed in action on March 28, 1945 during Operation Varsity, near Altschembeck, Germany. Pvt Stoyle is the son of Gerald T Stoyle Sr [b.12-15-1895 in NY died 8-1966 in NY] a City Electric turbine operator / and a machinist at the American Locomotive Co and the son of Helen Catherine Stoyle [b. 4-5-1901 in NY died 1- 1986 in FL] an office girl at a public garage. Gerald Sr served in WWI as a Corporal and was wounded in action at the French Front in approx Nov 1918 The 1930 US Census for Dunkirk, Chatauqua, New York shows Gerald residing at # 5 Main [?] St with his parents and sister Mary J Stoyle [b. 1922 in NY] Pvt Stoyle enlisted in the Army on March 7, 1942 at Fort Niagara, Youngstown, NY . His enlistment records states Gerald was a high school graduate, was single and was 5'9'' and 135lbs. During Operation Neptune, June 6th 1944 Pvt Stoyle parachuted from his C- 47 troop transport plane with Tail# 43-15124, #3 in the Chalk # 12 in the line. During Operation Varsity, March 24th, 1945 Pvt Stoyle parachuted from his C-47A Troop Transport plane with Tail#161, #2 in the Chalk and #9 in the line. Pvt Stoyle was awarded the Purple Heart Medal and the Croix de Guerre Unit Citation [French], the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 1 Bronze Stars and 2 Arrowheads, the World War II Victory Medal, WWII Honorable Service Lapel Button, Parachute Badge, the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Presidential Distinguished Unit Emblem. Pvt Stoyle is interred the Netherlands American Cemetery, Margraten, Netherlands at Plot C Row 15 Grave 12. Pvt Stoyle's gravesite has been adopted by Eric le Duc, a young man from the Netherlands. Mr Le Duc and his family placed flowers on Pvt Stoyle's grave on Memorial Day 2006.
